The UK new car market recorded further growth in October, increasing by 5.4% to 152,730 registrations, according to the latest figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

‘The latest figures are a positive sign for franchised dealers, with sustained activity in showrooms helping to support confidence across the sector,’ said Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA).

Private registrations rose by 4.1% to 58,229 units, reflecting continued consumer demand, while fleet registrations increased by 5.4% to 89,985 units. Business registrations rose by 24.5% to 4,516 units, contributing to the overall performance of the market.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations increased by 32.7% in October, representing a 32.0% market share for the month. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) registrations increased by 30.1%, while hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) decreased by -5.0 registrations for the second month.

Petrol registrations decreased by –11.6% to 56,876 units, while diesel registrations fell by -15.9% to 5,811 units.

Despite continued growth in electric vehicle registrations, the transition remains challenging, with manufacturers facing pressure to meet the 33% Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate target for 2026.

Sue Robinson said:

‘It is encouraging to see further growth in the new car market, reflecting the resilience of the automotive retail sector and continued demand from consumers.

‘As we approach the end of the year, maintaining this momentum will be important. While electric vehicle registrations are progressing, affordability and charging infrastructure remain key considerations for motorists. It is essential that Government continues to support consumer confidence and works with the industry to ensure a sustainable transition into 2027.’
